The artworks on display include  Cosmoriga, a multimaterial ropes of different thicknesses hanging from the ceiling covered with archive fabrics, and PressRiga, a work on a pedestal generated by the layering and pressing of recycled shirts among others. Stone Island is taking its diehard fans to the heart of its design and manufacturing process, mounting an installation at the company’s headquarters dedicated to the latest Prototype Research Series, the brand’s collection geared at pushing the boundaries of material innovation and manipulation. Series 08 comprises 100 limited-edition capes-anoraks developed in tandem with three industrial partners, crafted from multiaxial and flexible materials, including linen and a non-woven textile, which are then inkjet-printed and treated with a double lamination of aliphatic polyurethan coating. The outerwear is intended for protective and performance use in such fields as automotive and boating, among other sports. The installation features two areas, an art-like display of 32 capes opposite a video wall giving an abstract interpretation of the collaboration and development process behind the series.

Under the moniker “Valextra Vocabolario,” the luxury leather-goods specialist is mounting an installation at its Milan store, debuting a new Iside top-handle bag and a range of nylon accessories, unveiling a repair service and taking over the La Rinascente department store’s windows. For one, Serapian’s tie-up with Celestino gave way to an armchair elevated by the brand’s signature Mosaico leather weaving technique. The distinctive motif will also enhance the geometric shape of a series of trays that the label developed with Italian design company Bonacina.

Your go-to guide for Milan Design Week 2024

Every year Hermès presents its new home collections during Milan Design Week inside La Pelota Jai Alai and indoor sports center in the heart of Brera [via Palermo 10, Map]. Inspired by brutalist water towers, Hervé Sauvage and Charlotte Macaux Perelman created four glowing structures covered in translucent coloured paper. Inside them, visitors can discover the French fashion house’s latest creations, with a special focus on textiles, oscillating between tradition and innovation. For the Milano Design Week 2022, the Maurizio Cattelan and photographer Pierpaolo Ferrari color the street with new murals, thanks to the collaboration with emerging artists, giving life to TOILETPAPER Street.

Light That Moves Time

Ornamentalist Pierre-Marie breathes new life into hand-cutting techniques with the fascinating and colourful Chamade collection, while designer Stefania di Petrillo's Torsade lighting collection astounds with its elegant twists and turns. Just in time for Milan Design Week 2024, coinciding with the city event rather than participating in it, JR’s new monumental rock installation ‘La Nascita’ springs forth in front of Milan Central Station, a sort of starting point for those who will walk around the city for the design week. The series of printed images of rock formations plastered onto aluminum slats is JR’s first sculptural anamorphosis, considered as a deviation from his usual medium. Studio we+ collaborated with Elica and Fondazione Ermanno Casoli for Straordinaria, with the curation of the foundation’s artistic director, Marcello Smarrelli. The dynamic and radiant monumental artwork draws from the lightness of clouds, hence the use of airy materials, and the flow of air and warmth.

Described as the new center for architecture and design in Milan, Dropcity (find more here) begins its auto-construction in April 2024. Through a hybrid mix of 3D printing and construction partnerships, the tunnels are constructed in real time, showing visitors the process by which Dropcity is literally built. These new technologies and materials are put into action, with partners including Kiel University and Tbilisi based building collective SOCII. Displayed in oscillating tubes on a raised platform that mirrored the height of La Villa Planchart, the presentation marked a fusion of multiple design icons. The main event at Milan design week each year is Salone del Mobile, the world's biggest furniture fair, which takes place at the Fiera Milano exhibition centre from 7 to 12 June 2022. For its first presentation at Prada Frames at the Bagatti-Valsecchi Museum, the New York and Ghana-based design studio released an edition of 10 lacquered wood Euclid Stools.

This year’s program features collectible designs by acclaimed figures from Zaventem Ateliers, including Lionel Jadot, Arno Declerq, Maison Jonckers, KRJST Studio, Thomas Serruys, and Adeline Halot, that intricately reflect their social and environmental values. In keeping with its legacy of designs that stand the test of time, Hermès’ latest home decor collection debuting at Milan Design Week with an installation at the La Pelota venue is poised to showcase old and new pieces together, highlighting the enduring appeal of the house’s lifestyle objects. The French house’s equestrian heritage echoes in the Diapason d’Hermès armchair in hammered aluminum and leather, which mingles with a midcentury-nodding table lamp crafted from waxed brass and featuring a bicolor chèvre or Swift leather lampshade. A new 27-piece tableware set, called Tressage Équestres and inspired by the passementerie typical of harness-making, features subtle braiding patterns conceived by Parisian artist Virginie Jamin and done in a subdued color palette with occasional accents of yellow, red and blue.

Below this sun-like lighting, modular seating systems awaited exploration, inviting visitors to experience the texture of their fabric. This collaboration sought to explore the rich material expressions and traditional crafts of the region, offering reinterpretations of its biodiversity, expansive desertscape, and cultural customs through diverse perspectives. Harmont & Blaine takes part in the next edition of the Fuorisalone with an installation created in collaboration with the Italian-Peruvian artist Lorenzo Vitturi. The project, called “Stripe Stories,” comprises four site-specific works in which the brand’s fabrics are combined with recycled materials. Viutturi, through a process of craftsmanship and upcycling has shaped a real art gallery at the Corso Matteotti boutique, reimagined as a path to high tactile and visual impact that ranges from shop windows to interiors.

A massive industrial building will be the setting for Baranzante Ateliers, an initiative that shows emerging designers in unusual settings and aims to revive "the concept of medieval guilds". Lasvit will also show a new collection by Swedish studio Claesson Koivisto Rune at the exhibition, called Nebula, which will comprise table lamps in two sizes as well as a ceiling light. The exhibition space will also have restaurants – including a selection of IKEA hotdogs designed for the event – and turn into a music venue at night. The designer reimagined the CC-Tapis showroom for the exhibition, creating unique rooms for the collaboration. See Dezeen Events Guide's guide to Milan design week 2024 for details of many of the hundreds of events taking place across the city. Notable this year is the number of fashion brands showing in the city, with Issey Miyake, Loewe and Hermès all presenting exhibitions and products.
